Holyland

Holyland is a Drama based on the Manga with the same name. Yu has always been bullied in High School as well as outside of school. Yu finally gets fed up and decides to learn how to fight. At first he learns the basics of boxing. while learning he becomes a natural at doing the “One, Two” punch. This helps him defeat the bullies picking on him, but it also brings him to the attention of the rest of the gangs in town. He eventually gets named Yankee Hunter. Every yankee wanting to make a name for himself chases and looks to defeat the Yankee hunter.

Ishigaki Yuma plays Kamishiro Yu and he does a great job at it. It is almost as if the character from the manga comes alive. Izawa Masaki, Yu’s rival/mentor is played by Tokuyama Hidenori. Masaki is used as a way to inform the user about fighting techniques and how the streets work in Holyland. Both actors have experience in playing Yankees Yuma was in Gokusen and Hidenori was in Great Teacher Onizuka. This series is alot more serious then Gokusen and GTO. The focus on the story is fighting and Yu’s mental state through out the whole thing.

So this series is not really a comedy. it’s more of an action, psychological drama. A focus on explaining multiple martial arts and how they are effective in street fighting. It also focuses on Yu’s mental status as he struggles to find his own place where he can be happy. The drama is currently being subbed by Ikemen Subbing althou a bit slowly, but the wait is worth it. Currently on episode 7 and I can’t wait to watch more.

As for the manga you may like it if you enjoyed Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru, Tiji-Kun! and Grappler Baki you will probably enjoy this serious.

Yankee-Kun to Megane-chan

This season leaves very little to be desired. There has not been any good JDrama that I have been interested in. The only Drama that seems to have peeked my interest this season is Yankee-Kun to Megane-chan. A drama based on the manga with the same name.

Shinagawa Daichi is a delinquent that has accidentally become one through several misunderstandings. Now he spends his school days fighting his way through other Yankees while his class fears him. Adachi Hana the new class president has taken an interest in Daichi, Ofcourse this causes alot of trouble for him. Hana-chan has a secret on her own. This secret and her continued interest in Daichi’s life keeps him from leading a quiet High School life.

Three episodes into the series and it has been very faithful to the orginal manga in terms of visuals. Hana-chan is very cute and very hyper just like her Manga counter part. while poor Daichi is kept busy keeping up with Hana-chan. Hana-chan is played by Naka Riisa. I haven’t seen many of her dramas but she seems to be doing a great job playing Hana. Same goes for Narimiya Hiroki. Last time I saw him was in the Gokusen 2009 movie playing someone who graduated from high school 7 years ago. (Gokusen 2003)

Gokusen. this series just reminds me too much of Gokusen and Hana-chan reminds me of YanKumi. Everything from her enthusiasm of school life and ger ability to make any Yankee do her bidding. I have already seen a warehouse fight (how do they know where the badguys hideouts are?) and there has been an episode of convincing a student to come back to school.

This series follows the path of many comedies like My Boss My Hero, GTO and Gokusen. So if you liked those, then you will love Yankee-Kun to Megane-chan.

Angel Densetsu

Currently I’ve been reading the Manga called Angel Densetsu. It’s about a normal teenage boy who does well in school, never ditches class and good to everybody around him. His only fault is that he has the face of monster. During the Manga he has been called everything from Yakusa to devil-san.

This mangas main theme seems to be that rumors tend to cause more harm then good. In several instances rumors are spread through out the school causing major misunderstanding for Kitano Seiichirou (the protagonist). He eventually becomes head thug in the school and becomes feared by all.
